Central Austin includes the main business district, older in-town neighborhoods and the newly re-developed Mueller Airport. Mueller is a master-planned mixed-use development that will include the Dell Children's Hospital, high-density single family yard houses, row houses and multifamily homes together with commercial projects.
Housing choices in central Austin consist of older, smaller high-priced single family homes and condos, plus a myriad of new (mostly high-rise) condominiums west of Highway 35. East of Highway 35, there are a number of modestly priced older basic single family homes and condominiums plus the new Mueller Redevelopment.
Central Austin is served by Austin ISD schools and is home to the University of Texas main campus with a student population of around 50,000. The University of Texas at Austin was founded in 1883 and includes more than 130 undergraduate programs. Central Austin also has campuses of Austin Community College, Concordia University and Huston-Tillotson University.
Living in central Austin comes with many perks, such as access to a multitude of city parks, live events and cultural attractions. More and more home buyers are choosing to be close to their jobs and social activities as they decide to move to this area. Some of the major drawbacks are less personal space, smaller homes and higher prices.
